It is simply to your wind up which begins to break down, nevertheless smack-up finale rescues they regarding ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you can smartly dialogued, it has no great problem when you look at the life style down the incredibly unsightly term.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Motion picture Bulletin said “The film actions from the a simple speed, brand new talk is slick and you will characterisations generally energetic. Dick Powell and Evelyn Keyes lead brand new shed professionally, due to the fact investigator was played with big aplomb because of the that person character, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]
Richard Brody throughout the The new Yorker detailed “It terse and you may taut motion picture noir was considering the latest romantic and you will elite disputes of the name character, the new unlawful genius (played by Cock Powell) at the rear of a smart illegal gambling enterprise. The new film’s journalist and director, Robert Rossen, creates a beneficial multidimensional chess online game, to have mortal stakes, ranging from Johnny, their boss (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Received), good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will a beneficial scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sis (Nina Foch) worked from the casino and you may dated good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The caustically epigrammatic program, the brand new cast’s suavely regulated gestures off love and you will risk, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and smartly assertive photographs (together with their political conscience) make this pugnacious but really detailed spectacle a low profile vintage of one’s category.” [ ten ]

Photo keeps action and suspense, and you will certain quick joins of laughs to include flavor. Adept shows of the Knob Powell, due to the fact a playing home overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, just like the a police inspector, and additionally in the score . Even though the patch pursue a familiar pattern, this new characterizations are new together with performances good enough so you’re able to overbalance. Dialogue was terse and you can relevant, avoiding the emotional, phoney contact. Strange cam angles come along occasionally to escalate notice and you may temporarily arrest the attention. Solid teamplay from the Robert Rossen, increasing given that manager-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, unique writer and you will affiliate producer, and aids in making this a soft development.” [ eleven ]

Its mostly a point of seeing Mr. Powell undergo his paces stylishly whenever you are an enormous shed from actors and you can actresses provide your traditional service. Evelyn Keyes performs the good nothing lady who brings forth the latest finest in your and Ellen Drew is the sleek and you can slinky vixen just who will get your toward jams. Thomas Gomez try greasy as villain and you can Lee J. Cobb really does an alternative ready tour while the a weary police inspector just who in the end shuts the scenario. Many consuming and you can smoking is performed from the all concerned.” [ several ]
